New outdoor recreational facilities for older members of the community and people with a disability have been opened in Castletroy, County Limerick.
Councillor Mary Harty, Cathaoirleach of Limerick County Council today officially opened the Outdoor Gym and Bocce Courts at Castletroy Neighbourhood Park.
The new facilities have been developed by County Limerick Local Sports Partnership (CLLSP) and Limerick County Council, and funded through the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport.
The provision of the outdoor facilities is designed to increase physical activity opportunities leading to an increase in participation of older adults and people with a disability in the local community. A similar development is planned for the Demesne in Newcastle West.
Speaking at the launch, Councillor Harty said: “Castletroy continues to experience growth in terms of developments and population, which in turn must be matched by the provision of important infrastructure such as recreational amenities. It is encouraging to see continued investment in such facilities, despite the ongoing economic problems faced by the country. By investing in our communities, we are helping to promote social interaction and improve the health of our communities.”
“As the saying goes, ‘your health is your wealth’ and this is at the very heart of what is being delivered at Castletroy Neighbourhood Park. I have no doubt that the facilities will be well used in the years ahead further adding to the recreational infrastructure of the local area and, indeed County Limerick,” Councillor Harty added.
According to Phelim Macken, Sports Coordinator, CLLSP: “Supporting and facilitating the provision of sporting and recreational facilities and services for all members of the local community is one of the core functions of the Sports Partnership and Limerick County Council.”
He continued: “The installation of these recreation facilities is specifically designed to ensure the provision of “Whole of Life” physical activity for all. Rosemary Ryan, a Sports Inclusion Disability Officer with a remit for Older Adults, is employed between Limerick City and County Sports Partnerships and these facilities will provide a much needed boost to the provision of quality programmes and opportunities for these target groups.”
Castletroy Neighbourhood Park is one of the largest purpose-built public park and amenity areas in the Midwest Region.
The 17-acre development, which was opened in 2008, features 1.2 km of pedestrian pathways, a fully equipped children’s playground, skateboarding area, circular cycle route, and a central performance and exhibition area with covering structure. It also includes an array of natural habitats, including a 4,300 sq. metre lake, wetlands, wildflower grass areas and woodlands.
The Park is open to the public seven days a week during daylight hours, and managed by Limerick County Council.
