New outdoor recreational facilities for older members of the community and people with a disability have been officially opened in Newcastle West.
The Outdoor Gym and Bocce Courts have been opened less than a month after similar facilities were unveiled at Castletroy Neighbourhood Park. The new developments are located at the Demesne, a large area of amenity parkland located adjacent to Newcastle West Town Centre.
Speaking at the official opening, local Councillor Damien Riedy said: “I am delighted to have been able to support the development of these outdoor recreational facilities, which are a significant addition to Newcastle West’s recreational infrastructure.”
“The facilities help to increase physical activity opportunities in the wider Newcastle West area, and I am confident they will lead to an increase in participation of older adults and people with a disability in the local community,” he added.
The facilities have been developed by County Limerick Local Sports Partnership (CLLSP) and Limerick County Council, and funded through the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport.
According to Phelim Macken, Sports Coordinator, CLLSP: “Over the years, the Sports Partnership and Limerick County Council have been at the forefront of supporting and facilitating the provision of sporting and recreational facilities and services for all members of the local community. Through the provision of these facilities in West Limerick, we are fulfilling one of our core functions of getting all members of local communities to become more physically active.”
He continued: “The installation of these recreation facilities is specifically designed to ensure the provision of “Whole of Life” physical activity for all. Rosemary Ryan, a Sports Inclusion Disability Officer with a remit for Older Adults, is employed between Limerick City and County Sports Partnerships and these facilities will provide a much needed boost to the provision of quality programmes and opportunities for these target groups.”
